Skills for Life

The value of literacy, language and numeracy learning is well understood, especially for adults whose literacy and numeracy skills aren’t as well developed as they would like and for people who speak English as an additional language. But ICT is now an essential skill as well, together with the importance of understanding about money matters and the ways in which the media works.

Financial Literacy

Adults who are particularly affected by low levels of financial literacy often have these needs compounded by low levels of literacy and numeracy. There’s a large amount of work that is currently being done across the country, predominantly by the voluntary sector. Adult Learners’ Week is a great opportunity for practitioners to highlight provision in financial literacy, by running taster events which can be promoted on our free online Adult Learners’ Week calendar. There’ll be an update on work on this part of the skills for life theme in the next issue of Discover.
