ALW Awards
The Adult Learners’ Week Awards recognise the commitment, interest
and passion that adults bring to their learning, including those who
have learnt at and for work. They’re a great way of celebrating the
achievements of employees, and raising the profile of learning
opportunities in your workplace.
Awards are made to individuals, groups and families as well as to projects in the workplace that make a real difference to learners. It’s very easy to nominate, either online or using a paper copy – just click here for further details.
Award winners will receive a certificate and learning voucher to help them continue learning and will be invited to the Adult Learners’ Week National Awards Ceremony to be held on Monday 21 May 2007 in London. All nominees will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
Shelley Stalker, 25, of Cumbria was one of the nominees whose dedication to learning at work earned her an Adult Learners’ Week Award. After years out of education and having spent time in menswear retailing, Shelley Stalker, 25 from Cumbria, felt that an electrical apprenticeship with Gen II would provide her with the challenge and the career path she craved. Since being an apprentice, Shelley has had to overcome barriers of her gender in a male dominated profession, her age when learning with a peer group six years her junior and also a pay cut of over 60%. Shelley has completed various engineering related courses, continues to study on an ONC course in electrical engineering and has gained employment in the industry. She said. “I have struggled with my maths but it has not deterred me. I am very proud to have come this far.”
