Finding the right course

Want to learn a new course but can't quite see yourself sitting in a classroom?

Work or childcare demands making it difficult to fit in time to learn?

Just can't find the subject you want to do on offer near you?

Don't worry, it's never been easier to find a course that suits your needs. These days, you can learn exactly what you want, where you want, when you want. And you can get expert advice to help you decide.

A good place to start is by using the Directgov course search at www.direct.gov.uk/findacourse . When you get there, type in the course you want to do and your postcode to find all the courses available near you.

You might be surprised by the locations on offer - not just classrooms but libraries, community centres and outdoors too. You can even learn at home, through email and the Internet.

You'll find that many courses are aimed at complete beginners and all you need to get started is a willingness to learn. Others can build on your existing skills or lead to qualifications.

Narrow down your selection by choosing when you want to learn - day or evening, part-time or full-time, over a few hours or several years.

Once you have your shortlist, contact the college or learning provider to ask for a prospectus. Many will have open days when you can visit too.

Don't forget, you can also ring our freephone 0800 100 900 if you prefer to talk to someone.
