Adult Learning Enquiry

Seeking a longer-term settlement for adult learning

Date: Tuesday, 19 September 2006
Venue: Abbey Community Centre, Great Smith Street, Westminster, London
Ref: C14-07/09/06
Fee*: Free of charge

[Background] [Programme]

Background

NIACE has concerns about the pressures on funding for adult learning.

In essence we believe that at a time when demographic pressures mean that adults will be needed for two out of three jobs in the next decade, it is not the right moment to lose one in three publicly funded adult places in FE provision and adult education.

The current situation results from a combination of pressure from greater than expected numbers of 16 – 19 year olds and the shift in government priorities. It is causing a degree of instability that is far from ideal.

NIACE recognises this short-term pressure but believes that it is important to seek a longer-term settlement for adult learning. We believe there needs to be a conversation with those with an interest and knowledge of provision about what that settlement should look like.

bulletWhat should be the range and volume of adult learning provision available?
bulletWhat should be the balance of contribution to costs from employers, individuals and the state.

As a contribution to the debate, NIACE is hosting an enquiry on 19th September, at the Abbey Community Centre, Great Smith Street, Westminster, London.

bulletWe will hear evidence from a wide variety of organisations interested in adult learning.
bulletWe hope that this event will rally an audience of learners, tutors, organisers and policy makers.
bulletWe will ensure that there will be opportunities for the audience to make their views known through questions and “voting” activities.

We are making no charge for this event, but are inviting institutions to send contingents to it to make it as representative as possible. We expect interest to be keen and hope you will wish to take part.

We hope you will support us in rallying interest for this discussion, which will take place when learners traditionally hope to enrol in provision and we can hope for press interest.
