Broad, balanced and embedded:challenges and starting points in developing wider family learning provision
[Background & Aims] [Audience] [Programme] BackgroundFamily Learning provision figures significantly in a number of education and health initiatives, including adult and community learning, Sure Start, extended schools and family support. With its tradition of partnership working, its intergenerational reach, its focus on personal as well as skill development, and its use of pooled funding, Family Learning throws up many challenges for providers, practitioners and funding agencies. One of the current challenges is that of developing a curriculum that is broad and responsive to the wide range of families’ needs and interests. This challenge is highlighted in the way that Family Learning provision is currently developing through two separate strands, one concerned with ‘family literacy, language and numeracy’ and the other with ‘wider family learning’ (that is, family learning activities and programmes that are not eligible for LSC funding through its family literacy, language and numeracy strand). The two strands are developing at different rates, with considerably more funding for family literacy, language and numeracy programmes than for wider family learning due to the former’s role in tackling adult basic skills needs. There is also greater support for developing the infrastructure of family literacy, language and numeracy, for example, through the Basic Skills Agency’s ‘Skills for Families’ initiative which is supporting pathfinder LEAs. These regional conferences will give delegates the opportunity to address the challenge of developing Family Learning provision that is broad, balanced and embedded in local, regional and national infrastructure.
