Final Report from The Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning

Date: Wednesday 5th March 2008
Venue: QE11 Conference Centre, Westminster, London SW1P 3EE
Ref: C15-64/0308
Fee: Free of Charge

[Background]

Background

The Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning will launch its final report From Compliance to Culture Change on findings on the employment of disabled staff working in the lifelong learning sector at the conference. Bill Rammell, Minister of State, Lifelong Learning, Further and Higher Education, DIUS has been invited to launch the report. Despite robust disability legislation, little attention has focused on disabled staff in the lifelong learning sector. In policy terms they appear to be invisible and many disabled staff still face unlawful discrimination. This report will:

bulletGive feedback on extensive research into the employment of disabled staff in the lifelong learning sector
bulletMake recommendations for a number of agencies and organisations to move from legal compliance towards change in disability equality culture change within the sector.

Participants attending the conference will:

bulletReceive a copy of the Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning’s final report From Compliance to Culture Change
bulletDevelop understanding of the key issues and barriers faced by disabled staff working in lifelong learning and what can be done to overcome these
bulletDevelop understanding of the perspective of lifelong learning organisations
bulletHave the opportunity to consider what actions they can take to move towards disability equality
bulletLearn how the lifelong learning sector can be transformed from reacting to legal requirements towards anticipatory practice.

The conference is aimed at those who can have a real impact in the journey towards equality for disabled staff, namely:

bulletPrincipals, governors, vice chancellors and other senior managers in the lifelong learning sector
bulletThose working in human resource departments in the lifelong learning sector
bulletDisabled staff working in the lifelong learning sector
bulletKey government agencies and funding and quality bodies in the lifelong learning sector.

The report and the conference are not just about disability equality for disabled staff, but about inclusion for everyone. An organisation with a good record and reputation for disability equality will inevitably have a good overall reputation in the eyes of employees, learners and students, and regulatory bodies.

The conference is free of charge to all participants. Disabled participants who are not supported by their organisation/workplace will be reimbursed for travel costs, on request. Arrival and registration is at 9:30 am, for a 10:00 am start. The conference ends at 3:30 pm.

The agenda for the day along with joining instructions will be posted to those who register and are allocated a place. To apply for a place, please complete and post or fax back the application form to NIACE.

Please ensure that you register your attendance using the application form by Friday 22 February 2008. There are only 140 place available on this event.
