[Background] [Audience] [Programme]

Background

New legislation and single equalities and what it means to you
The government is committed to addressing inequalities and discrimination in society. The recommendations in the equalities review ‘Fairness and Freedom’ will affect you. It offers:

bulletA new comprehensive framework for measuring progress towards equality
bulletA new legal framework - simpler, more coherent and outcome focused
bulletMore accountability for delivering equality
bulletA more sophisticated enforcement regime

Inevitably there are challenges. This workshop will explore these issues, consider the implications for disability equality in practice and the approach towards single equalities.

The June regional workshop will enable you to:

bulletConsider single equalities, new legislation and what it means for you
bulletHear directly from Principals or Senior Managers about leading change in equality
bulletActively explore good practice and practical solutions in relation to the project in your region and:
bulletCarrying out impact assessments
bulletEmbedding equality within self assessment and planning processes
bulletStrategies for involving disabled people
bulletMeeting the employment duties
bulletEngaging the voluntary and community sector
bulletReceive a copy of the Disability Rights Commission’s guidance for post-school providers on implementing disability legislation and consider how to use it
bulletNetwork, share experiences and solutions with colleagues

The DED Support Programme coordinator for the East Midlands region is: Kathryn James Development Officer (Learning & Health) NIACE Tel: 0116 204 4281 Email: kathryn.james@niace.org.uk The workshop is part of implementing the Disability Equality Duty support programme funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to assist further education and adult community learning providers to meet their legal duties.
