[Why 'informal' adult learning?] [What is the event for?] [Who is the event for?]

Why ‘informal’ adult learning?

‘Informal’ adult learning can be any learning people do for pleasure, personal development or for the benefit of their community – rather than for qualifications and work. It includes everyday learning from the TV and radio, learning through volunteering, joining a book club, working an allotment, visiting museums or following a hobby, as well as joining courses.

The Government understands that this learning makes a big contribution to our health and happiness, that it builds skills and interests, inspires us, helps us makes friends and enjoy life, and strengthens families and communities. £210 million of public money is spent on it annually.

The Government has launched a national consultation exercise to gather information for a major policy paper about the future shape of informal adult learning. Learners’ views are at the heart of that consultation. The Government wants to listen, and it particularly wants to hear what learners think.

What is the event for?

The day will be an opportunity for adult learners to have their say about the future of informal adult learning and to think about some of the main questions the Government is asking. These include:

bulletWhat can digital, TV, mobile phone and internet technologies contribute?
bulletHow do we make sure everyone has fair access to informal learning?
bulletWhat, where and how will people want to learn in the future?
bulletHow do we make the best use of public money?

The ideas from the two consultation events in Sheffield and London will be written up and sent to the Government as part of the consultation. They will be submitted as an expression of learners’ views.

Who is the event for?

The day is for all adult learners who have views on the possibilities for informal adult learning in the 21st century, and the best way of making these happen. It is open to people learning in any setting – however formal or informal – including those studying on line, learning in informal groups and societies, at work and in adult education classes.

For both events, arrival and registration is at 10:00am for a 10:30am start. The event will end at 3:15pm.

The day is free for learners, including lunch and refreshments. We can help with childcare and other forms of support (see application form). The events will be informal and lively, with lots of discussion, usually in small groups.
