[Background & Aims] [Audience] [Programme]

Background

Attaining an employment rate of 80% is a challenging target for Government, especially when a declining cohort of young people receives the largest share of the public funding for education and training. Employability skills are central to gaining and keeping employment as well as career progression. However, it has not always been easy to define these skills and assess their impact on productivity and skills development. The lack of such skills, particularly in elementary entry level occupations, is acknowledged as one reason for the UK's 'long tail of underachievement’.

There are compelling reasons to work together to ensure we integrate the Skills for Life strategy with employability in order to meet the Leitch agenda and to successfully meet the needs of people who are trapped in low-skilled, poorly-paid jobs or excluded from the labour market through lack of skills in literacy, language or numeracy.

There is a need to raise our understanding of and engagement with employability training provision and provide effective information to key stakeholders.

The event aims to:

bulletexchange ideas
bulletlearn from each other about what works
bulletreflect on practice
bullethear about the range of resources available.

Participants will gain:

bulletan increased knowledge and understanding of the issues
bulletan opportunity to share practice.

Following attendance at this conference, participants will be able to:

bulletreflect on current practice
bulletdebate issues
bulletexplore new ways of working together.
