[Background & Aims] [Who is the event for?] [Cost and About] [Application Form]

Background & Aims

Why ‘learning from learners’?

Learning is powerful. It can open doors for us all and change and build communities. It can help us become a more prosperous and successful society. But for this to happen, we need to understand what kinds of learning will work best to meet all these different demands. Learners' experiences of learning (now and in the past), along with their knowledge of the hopes and needs of their families, friends, workmates and communities, are a vital source of knowledge for those who plan and provide learning. Learners' views can help make sure we have the right courses in the right places, at the best times, and delivered in the most accessible, enjoyable and useful ways.

Listening to learners is also about democracy. Adult learners usually pay for their learning through taxes and fees and should therefore have a say about what's on offer to them.

Aims

The day will be an opportunity for adult learners to share information and ideas about:
how learners' views are already sought and listened to

bulletthe benefits of listening to learners' views (for both providers of learning and learners themselves)
bulletwhat works in practice and what doesn't
bulletadvice and guidance for providers about how to listen to learners really effectively

Who is the event for?

The day is for all adult learners who want to make sure learners' views are heard properly. It is open to people learning at work, at home, in their local community, in local authority adult education centres, colleges, universities, in classes held at the local school, health centre or sports centre - in fact, anywhere! It's for adults learning part time (perhaps for just a couple of hours a week) or full time, learning online or via distance learning packages, and those learning in informal groups. We hope it will include people from different backgrounds, learning in a wide range of settings, and from different parts of the country.

Cost and About

Cost
The day is free for learners, including lunch and refreshments. Travel costs can be covered and we can help with childcare and other forms of support (see application form).

On the day
It is intended to be informal, friendly and lively day, with lots of discussion, usually in small groups. There will be people to help guide the discussion and make a note of all the ideas and information. Many of those leading discussion groups will be learners themselves.

What will happen afterwards?
There will be information at the event about how to get involved in other learners' networks and activities - if people are interested in doing more. In addition, the important messages from the day will be written into a short leaflet for distribution to providers of learning across the country to encourage them to listen to learners. It will also go out to learners. Everyone who attends the event will have an opportunity to volunteer to comment on the leaflet before it's published.
