[Background] [Audience] [Programme]

Background

This is the second annual conference of the LSC, NIACE & NIMHE Partnership Project (LSC – Learning and Skills Council, NIACE – National Institute of Adult Continuing Education, NIMHE – National Institute of Mental Health in England) to promote access to learning and skills for people with mental health difficulties.

In May 2006 the national LSC will publish their ‘Proposals to Improve Services to People with Mental Health Difficulties’. These proposals will result in an action plan in how the sector will take forward improvements. A draft action plan will be presented at the conference for consultation and to enable delegates to think how they may take forward the proposals within their own organisations and improve access and achievement in learning for people with mental health difficulties.

A number of workshops will also showcase examples of good practice in promoting adult learning for people with mental health difficulties and some of the project work being developed through the LSC, NIACE & NIMHE Partnership project.

The conference will also launch two new resources that capture the learner/service user voice and highlight why adult learning has such an important role to play in promoting social inclusion and recovery. The resources to be launched are:

bullet‘One in Four’ – a powerful Learners’ Voices publication of poetry, articles and art work by people who experience mental health difficulties; and
bulletA CD Rom from ‘Ordinary Voices’, the learners from Lancashire Adult Education Authority ‘Stepping Stones’ provision who talk about their journey through adult learning and in recovery.

Delegates will receive a copy of both resources at the conference.

This conference will be of interest to practitioners and managers of both adult education and health and social care services in statutory and voluntary organisations, and to learners/service users who want to:

bulletFind out about current policy developments driving this agenda
bulletHear about some of the good practice in supporting adults with mental health difficulties to access learning
bulletBe involved in formulating the action plan to improve services for people with mental health difficulties, and
bulletReceive copies of the ‘One in Four’ publication and the Learners’ Voices CD Rom.
