What is the E-Guides and Libraries programme?

The E-Guides and Libraries staff development programme has been developed by NIACE to support library staff in developing and increasing the use of e-learning. E-learning is learning supported or enhanced by the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) [E-learning Standards Lifelong Learning UK/Fento, LSDA 2005]. NIACE has developed this programme after considerable interest from the library sector in the existing E-Guides programme.

The programme aims to increase the use of e-learning in libraries through developing the skills and knowledge of E-Guides so that they are able to support colleagues in their use of technology in supporting learning. Each E-Guide is encouraged to cascade their skills and knowledge. E-Guides contribute to raising the quality of supporting learning throughout their library.

The ‘Post-16 e-learning programme’ funded NIACE to develop the E-Guides and Libraries programme and to roll out a pilot. Throughout the development of this programme NIACE has also been in close discussions with the MLA (Museums, Libraries and Archives Council).

How will the pilot work?

The pilot will be rolled out from November 2005 to February 2006. There will be one training group per English region. Each region can nominate 12 library staff to train as Library E-Guides. In each region, the participants should come from 3-6 different library authorities, which can nominate 2-4 participants each. There will be no charge for the training, however participants must be available for the equivalent of 5 training days, plus additional time to implement e-learning in their library environment.

Although the training element is not accredited externally, a certificate of course completion will be awarded to all participants completing the E-Guides and Libraries pilot.
