Libraries Pilot 2005 – 2006
E-Guides – lead by example (Libraries Edition)
What is the E-Guides and Libraries programme?
The E-Guides and Libraries staff development programme has been developed by
NIACE to support library staff in developing and increasing the use of
e-learning. E-learning is learning supported or enhanced by the use of
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) [E-learning Standards
Lifelong Learning UK/Fento, LSDA 2005]. NIACE has developed this
programme after considerable interest from the library sector in the existing
E-Guides programme.
The programme aims to increase the use of e-learning in libraries through
developing the skills and knowledge of E-Guides so that they are able to support
colleagues in their use of technology in supporting learning. Each E-Guide is
encouraged to cascade their skills and knowledge. E-Guides contribute to raising
the quality of supporting learning throughout their library.
The ‘Post-16 e-learning programme’ funded NIACE to develop the E-Guides and
Libraries programme and to roll out a pilot. Throughout the development of this
programme NIACE has also been in close discussions with the MLA (Museums,
Libraries and Archives Council).

How will the pilot work?
The pilot will be rolled out from November 2005 to February 2006. There will
be one training group per English region. Each region can nominate 12 library
staff to train as Library E-Guides. In each region, the participants should come
from 3-6 different library authorities, which can nominate 2-4 participants
each. There will be no charge for the training, however participants must be
available for the equivalent of 5 training days, plus additional time to
implement e-learning in their library environment.
Although the training element is not accredited externally, a certificate of
course completion will be awarded to all participants completing the E-Guides
and Libraries pilot.

How will the Library E-Guides cascade the training?
Within the training programme, Library E-Guides will consider how they will
cascade their skills and knowledge, as this will vary for each organisation.
Examples are likely to be:
 | Cascade skills through peer support ‘on-the job’. |
 | ‘Just in time’ training – responding to needs of an individual. |
 | Practical workshops. |

 | Library E-Guides will be responsible for cascading their skills to
colleagues at their libraries within an agreed action plan. |
 | Each organisation will be responsible for providing appropriate support in
order that E-Guides can successfully cascade the training and provide support
to colleagues. |

The E-Guides and Libraries training programme is made up of core and optional
modules. Participants will be able to choose four optional modules in their
training groups.
Day 1 (Core modules)
 | Module 1 – Introduction to the E-Guides and Libraries programme.
After this module participants will have a clear understanding of the
E-Guides and Libraries programme and of their role as an E-Guide in libraries.
They will have analysed their current situation and will have identified their
individual aims for the programme. |
 | Module 2 – Supporting (e-)learning in libraries.
After this module participants will have a clear understanding of the
learning process and of how e-learning can support this process. They will
have also explored how they can support the learning process within their role
in the library. |
Day 2 (Core modules)
 | Module 3a: Producing your own content.
After this module participants will have developed basic practical skills
in creating their own interactive learning content |
 | Module 4a: Cascading your skills.
After this module participants will have an understanding and practical
skills for supporting colleagues with their own (e-learning) skills to develop
and apply more e-learning skills in their practice. |
Day 3 (Core + optional module)
 | Module 5: Change and the role of E-Guides in organisational change.
After this module participants will have a clear understanding of change
in organisations and the role play in this process. They will have developed a
strategy of dealing with this process. |

Day 4 (Optional modules)
Day 5 (Optional module + final core module)
 | Optional module. |
 | Module 9: Future planning.
After this module participants will have reviewed their action plan and will
have identified a practical way forward for using and cascading their
e-learning skills. |
Participants can choose 4 modules out of 7 optional modules. The optional
modules are:
 | Module 3b: Using existing resources (*suggested as the first optional
module).
After this module participants will have identified key online resources and
will have developed and practised a process for evaluating content. They will
have explored how e-learning resources can be used creatively in a library
context. |
 | Module 3c: Producing your own content (advancing your skills).
After this module participants will have developed more advanced skills in
creating their own interactive learning content. |
 | Module 4b: Creating a cascade training programme.
After this module participants will have developed a practical plan for
cascading their e-learning skills to a wider group of colleagues through a
systematic training programme. |
 | Module 4c: Cascading training in practice.
After this module participants will have identified relevant training
resources and will have developed practical skills for cascading their
e-learning skills to a wider group of colleagues through a systematic training
programme. |
