[Background] [Programme]

Background

This one-day training is built around the Paul Hamlyn Evaluation Resource Pack. The Resource Pack was produced, in association with NIACE, to help voluntary and community sector managers, front-line workers and volunteers use creative and participatory methods to evaluate their work. It is full of useful information and good ideas that will work with a diverse range of organisations, with different structures and resources.

The Pack’s development involved a wide variety of projects funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation that are concerned to make an important difference to people’s lives. The projects contributed many of the methods and good practice described. Voluntary and community sectors organisations also tested the materials before publication.

Content
This one-day training workshop will introduce participants to the Evaluation Resource Pack and some of its methods, with the aim of supporting better and more participative and democratic practices.

The training encourages positive approaches to evaluation and its purposes, so that project staff and volunteers can do the best job possible for those they work with. Taking time to focus on what works well, what needs changing, and what has come as a surprise, all adds to the learning and staff development of both small and larger organisations.

The evidence collected in the evaluation process can of course be invaluable for further fund raising, lobbying and campaigning for the issues and the people that projects care about.

Who will benefit from attending the training?
This training will benefit participants from a wide range of voluntary and community sectors organisations, including those working (in paid and unpaid roles) at different levels, from frontline development workers to middle and senior management. This includes those active in the following areas:

bulletlearning
bullethealth and social care
bulletsports
bulletarts and culture
bullethousing and environment
bulletanimal rights and welfare
bulletcampaigning and social justice.

It will also be helpful to adult learning institutions involved in community-based projects (such as FE colleges and local authority adult learning services), and other public services that are concerned to work better with local communities, such as health, social services, youth, and museums and libraries.

Training Approach
The training will be interactive and build on participants’ previous experience. Care will be taken to ensure it is accessible in terms of the environment, content and delivery methods. Workshops will involve up to 40 participants.

Training Aims

bulletexplore participatory and democratic evaluation methods and why these are important and effective
bulletmodel the inclusive and participative approaches that characterise the evaluation pack
