_______________________________ Background & AimsMental health difficulties are a major reason for ill-health in this country. One in four of us will experience mental health difficulties at some point in our lives and an estimated one-third of GP time is spent on mental health issues. The number of people claiming Incapacity Benefit because of mental health difficulties has almost doubled in the past ten years, and this does not include those with secondary mental health difficulties or those who develop mental health difficulties while on Incapacity Benefit. People with mental health difficulties have traditionally been under-represented in adult education and too many people with mental health difficulties spend their days alone and without activity to fill their time. Yet we know that being in work, participating in learning, having friends and being involved in the community promotes positive mental well-being and can be an important part of the recovery process. Information, advice and guidance is a crucial part of getting people back to work, into learning, voluntary work or other community activities. Good IAG that provides appropriate support empowers people to take control of their lives and make the most of opportunities and their potential. IAG can be part of the recovery process that enables people to get on with their lives. This event will give an overview of mental health and how it can be a cause and a consequence of social exclusion, a brief overview of the current policies that support social inclusion for people with mental health difficulties and provide evidence on how learning and work can impact on mental health issues. Participants will be able to reflect on how they currently work with people with mental heath difficulties and how they might develop their Information, Advice and Guidance service to ensure they are appropriate and effective. _______________________________ AudienceThe seminars will be of interest to staff from the following organisations:
