Background & Aims

This interactive one day training workshop will enable participants to develop and discuss ways of recognising and recording progress and achievement for people with mental health difficulties with the aim of ensuring improvements in the quality and personalisation of the learner experience.

RARPA and mental health
RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement in Non- accredited Learning) is a flexible learner-centred approach, which enables learners to take control of their learning. The approach raises awareness of the learning that has taken place, builds confidence and encourages enthusiasm by using a more engaging manner of achieving personal goals. The process has a positive effect when it is viewed as an integral part of the learning process. It provides scope for creative approaches and encourages staff development.

This is a particularly useful approach for learners with mental health difficulties, and supports the process of tracking areas such as progress in developing self-esteem, self-confidence, changes in motivation or attitude to learning. All of which are powerful drivers for progression into other learning, volunteering or employment. This framework relates to the Common Inspection Framework and other quality and person-centred approaches.

What are the benefits from attending?
The workshop will benefit participants from a range of organisations working with people with mental health difficulties.   By the end of the training participants will have:

bulletImproved their understanding of the rationale for implementing RARPA and the relevance of the process to learners with mental health difficulties
bulletExplored applications of the RARPA process and tools to support learners with mental health difficulties
bulletShared experiences and practical ideas to develop and identify resources to support learners with mental health difficulties.
