Training Background

It has long been recognised that engaging learners in numeracy provision is a difficult challenge but in order to reach the ambitious targets set out in the Leitch report, learners need to be encouraged to address their numeracy skills.

Vocational tutors and those working in informal provision can be instrumental in motivating learners to think positively about their ability to understand and think mathematically. You can play a key role in both supporting numeracy development and encouraging learners to join numeracy classes.

Audience

Who should attend?
NIACE is offering a one-day course designed for vocational tutors to support their learners with numeracy. It is a practical course aimed at those who teach practical, craft, vocational or life skills in a range of settings. The course will be of particular interest to practitioners who want to develop confidence in their own numeracy and to motivate their learners to think positively about their ability to understand and think mathematically.

The course will be relevant to:

bulletVocational tutors in FE
bulletVoluntary and Community tutors
bulletVocational tutors working in Prisons and the Probation Service
bulletYouth workers and those working with 16-19 year olds in informal settings

Course content

The one- day training course, funded by DIUS, aims to raise awareness of the numeracy issues faced by learners on vocational courses and in formal and informal provision. A “Catching Confidence in Numeracy” tool has also been developed to help learners recognise the part that confidence plays in numerical thinking and numeracy ability. An introduction to using this simple tool is part of the course.

In return for their free place, participants will be expected to take part in a short pilot to use the “Catching Confidence in Numeracy “ tool with their learners.

What are the benefits of attending this workshop?

If you are working successfully with learners – building confidence, developing practical, personal and vocational skills – this course will help you to recognise and address the numeracy issues that some of your learners may face.

The course and tools will support the continuing professional development of a range of staff to recognise and encourage numeracy and numerical thinking in their learners.

Training aim

bulletTo gain an understanding of how numeracy relates to mathematics
bulletTo raise awareness of numeracy and how it affects learners
bulletTo identify where learners need to use numeracy skills and signpost them to access the requisite support
bulletTo explore effective approaches to the development of mathematical thinking
bulletTo familiarise participants with the “Catching Confidence in Numeracy” tool and its application
bulletTo reflect on current practice

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

bulletidentify the critical role of numeracy in their context
bulletbroadly identify effective numeracy teaching methods
bulletsignpost learners to access numeracy support
bulletuse the Catching Confidence in Numeracy tool
