It is estimated that 1 in 10 of the UK population have
dyslexia (British Dyslexia Association). That means up to 2.5 million UK
workers, according to a recent TUC briefing “Dyslexia in the workplace – a guide
for unions” (Hagan, 2004).
Are you clear about your
obligations to dyslexic employees and customers under the Disability
Discrimination Act?
Do you know how to get the best
from your dyslexic staff?
Do your employees know
how to help dyslexic customers?
Are you aware that
funding is available to support the employers of dyslexic people?
NIACE is offering 3 training sessions to help employers
answer these questions and ensure that they address the needs of dyslexic people
in their organisations.
Session 1: Dyslexia Awareness Suitable for any member of staff, the session will dispel myths about
dyslexia, indicate how dyslexia may affect adults at work, and help staff to
consider how dyslexia may affect their colleagues and customers.
Session 2: Dyslexia & Human Resources This session will look at the implications of dyslexia in the recruitment
and support of dyslexic employees, including the Access to Work scheme and the
implications of the DDA.
Session 3: Dyslexia & Training This session will help workplace trainers and those organising training to
consider how they can make sure their practices are “dyslexia friendly”. It
includes guidance on producing training materials and training methods.
