[Background] [Programme]

Background

Dyslexia affects 1 in 10 of the population and the TUC briefing “Dyslexia in the workplace - a guide for unions” (Hagan, 2004) recently estimated that up to 2.5 million workers in the UK are affected by dyslexia.

The Disability Discrimination Act (1995) now requires all employers to take account of and address the needs of dyslexic people in their workforce and so NIACE is offering a one-day training event to help employers ensure that they address the needs of dyslexic people in their organisations.

The aim of the training is to help employers become aware of dyslexia and how it may affect their workforce. The training will also help employers to address the needs of dyslexic people by making them aware of the "reasonable adjustments" they may need to make, particularly in relation to workplace training, as well as indicating what benefits dyslexic people may bring to the workplace.

The training day will cover:

Dyslexia Awareness
This session will dispel myths about dyslexia, indicate how dyslexia may affect adults at work, and help employers to consider how dyslexia may affect their colleagues and customers.

Dyslexia & Human Resources
This session will look at dyslexia as an issue in the recruitment and support of dyslexic employees, including the Access to Work scheme and the implications of the DDA.

Dyslexia & Training
This session will help workplace trainers and those organising training to consider how they can make sure their practices are “dyslexia friendly”. It includes guidance on producing training materials and training methods.

Delegates who come to this taster session may wish to recommend our other courses to their colleagues. Click here for information on our other dyslexia training courses.
