Background & Aims

Over the last few years a number of ‘Prescriptions for Learning’ projects have been established around the country. These projects involve basing a learning adviser in a GP’s surgery or health centre to take referrals of individuals and work with them to access appropriate learning opportunities. The Department of Work and Pensions’ five-year strategy paper ‘Opportunity and Security throughout life’, published in February2005, identifies such initiatives as a useful way of helping people with health conditions or disabilities get into work.

In 2004 NIACE published ‘Winning Hearts and Minds’, which is a guide to setting up a ‘Prescriptions for Learning’ project. One-day events based on this publication will explore how to promote health and wellbeing through participation in adult learning. All participants will be provided with a copy of ‘Winning Hearts and Minds’. Since September 2000, when NIACE first piloted a ‘Prescriptions for Learning’ project the initiative has been actively and continuously developed. Experience suggests that ‘Prescriptions for Learning’ may be taken up by people from any sector, including primary care health services, information, advice and guidance networks, adult, community and further education providers or the voluntary sector. No matter who takes the initiative, they will find themselves working in partnership with fellow-professionals from one or more of the other sectors.

Course Content

During the day we will explore the relationship between health and wellbeing and the impact of learning on health. We will look at the role of information, advice and guidance in helping people to access learning and work. We will consider how to set up a ‘Prescriptions for Learning’ project including how to engage with health professionals. We will also look at the role of the Learning Adviser. We will suggest ways of showing that such projects work and how to keep them going.
