[Background] [Aims] [Audience] [Programme] [Application Form]

Background

The training of new teaching staff in post-compulsory education is vital in developing higher quality experience for learners. The on-going development of staff, through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is also important to help them keep abreast of change, new approaches and methods. This is particularly so in relation to literacy, language and numeracy teaching as, years of neglect and low levels of teaching qualifications mean that much has still to be done to professionalise the workforce. The Skills for Life Strategy has raised the profile of this area of work and is resourcing change and development, especially through the Skills for Life Improvement Programme.

This conference organised jointly by NIACE and UCU, with sponsorship from City and Guilds and funding from the European Social Fund, provides an opportunity for all staff working in literacy, language and numeracy whether part-time or full time, managers, providers and planners to hear about planned changes as well as current practices which are effective in raising standards of teaching and learning.

More Immediately
New teacher standards are being drafted and have been consulted on; standards for teachers of literacy, language and numeracy are a priority. This conference will share information about these standards. In addition, there are many interesting and innovative approaches to teacher education and CPD which will be shared and explored. The importance of teacher training is paramount in achieving the increased goals announced by the government.

The event aims to share evidence from NRDC research on teacher education and the latest developments of standards from the Sector Skills Council, Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK).

Workshops will provide opportunities to hear about interesting and effective practice and questions and discussion will be shared with a panel of national experts.
