Secure Borders, Safe HavensIntegration with diversity in modern BritainA NIACE consultation seminar on the Home Office White Paper on Asylum and Immigration
[Programme] [NACE Response to White Paper] The Home Office White Paper was published in February 2002. Responses are invited by 21st March 2002. The White Paper sets out proposals covering citizenship and nationality, working in the UK, asylum, fraud and trafficking, border controls and marriage. The proposals have had a mixed reception. The Refugee Council expresses support for some measures, such as the confirmation that cash for asylum seekers will replace vouchers. However the Council is concerned about the failure to address unfairness in the decision-making processes; the proposals to locate accommodation centres in isolated rural areas; and to extend detentions. Oxfam and Amnesty International share these concerns. NIACE is holding a half-day briefing and consultation event for its wider membership, to help frame our response to the White Paper. There are only 50 places available at this seminar. The debate on citizenship is one in which NIACE will also be engaged in at its Annual Study Conference in April 2002. _______________________________ Programme
