This conference is sponsored by Communities and Local Government (CLG) and
the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). The National Youth
Homelessness Scheme is a central element in Government plans to take forward
commitments to prevent and tackle youth homelessness particularly among 16 and
17 year olds.
2007/08 has been the inaugural year of the National Youth Homelessness Scheme
(NYHS). Initiatives have included:
establishing nine local authority centres of excellence to lead regional
events and raise awareness of effective working to prevent and tackle youth
homelessness (further details of events and activities are on the NYHS
website)
a programme of small grants to local authorities to enable implementation
and testing of improvements in services to young people
development of four exemplar Supported Lodgings schemes
support and promotion of models of mediation and early prevention work
with families
a joint project with Department for Children, Schools and Families to
develop guidance and reference sites for effective joint working between
Children’s Services and Housing teams.
This national conference will explore models of multi-disciplinary,
multi-agency working to:
prevent youth homelessness
provide safe, supportive accommodation for homeless young people
address the wider needs of such young people to support their transition
to sustainable adult life.
Discussion will focus on local authority Children’s Services and Housing
teams working in partnership and drawing in health, youth justice and housing
and support providers to achieve
better outcomes for vulnerable young people, including:
