In 2005-2006 the DFES supported NIACE in developing a curriculum guide for
providers working with Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) learners. The production
of this guide coincided with a number of changes in adult education, most
importantly the move away from non-accredited learning described as Adult and
Community Learning (ACL) to the development of Personal and Community
Development Learning (PCDL) The guide evolved into what is called A Curriculum
for Diversity, the main focus for which is an assessment of BME participation in
PCDL. The guide also focuses on some of the issues and challenges faced by adult
education providers, as well as good practice that many are engaged in The guide
aims to provide sound practical advice to providers, and will be of particular
value to new tutors and tutors not familiar with working with BME learners. It
has something for tutors who have experience of working with BME learners and is
designed so that the reader can dip into and out of sections of interest.
Many aspects of the guide will be of interest to frontline staff who do not
have a teaching relationship with learners. This includes those in frontline
services in colleges, LEAs, universities and in the voluntary and community
sectors as well as those providing advice and/or guidance services.
In concise summary form the guide covers the following areas, all of which
are discussed in greater detail on the supporting CD:
Cultural competencies
BME participation in PCDL
BME learners’ experiences
Top tips from tutors working with BME learners
Race equality legislation
Ofsted inspections and PCDL
Good practice case studies
Ideas for follow-up work
This DfES-funded conference aims:
To launch a guide and supporting CD called A Curriculum for Diversity
To share with adult education practitioners and those in support services
some of the findings of the overall project
To share best practice in working with BME learners
To debate some of the issues and challenges for tutors in engaging BME
learners in PCDL
To sample and try out the guide
To participate in good practice workshops and demonstrations
Delegates will:
have an opportunity to find out about good practice in this area
have a chance to network and discuss developments in relation to PCDL
receive a free copy of the Curriculum for Diversity guide and supporting
CD
Providers will be able to use the guide in a practical way when back in their
institutions. Through a close reading of the CD, and through visiting suggested
sites, it should be possible to acquire information and advice on a broad range
of themes relating to BME participation in adult education.
