There is increasing recognition that addressing the Literacy, Language and
Numeracy (LLN) needs of learners within vocational programmes can provide
learners with the confidence, competence and motivation necessary for them to
succeed. (DfES 2004)
Recent research from the NRDC (2006) has clearly demonstrated the benefits of
embedding or integrating, highlighting the strong correlations between embedded
features of provision and higher retention and achievement rates.
This NRDC / NIACE conference will enable participants to find out about the
latest research and current practice in the field.
More Immediately Although many providers are keen to develop embedded courses, they are
concerned about the best ways of going about this and about having the resources
to do it well. This conference will clarify the issues around embedding and will
draw together information about the latest research. There will be opportunities
to hear about and explore practical approaches to embedding in a range of
vocational areas and the challenges and opportunities that embedding presents.
Aims By the end of the conference delegates will:
Know about recent research into embedding LLN
Have considered the potential impact of current policy developments on
embedding
Have a greater understanding of the key factors in achieving successful
embedding
Have explored ways of practically building on the research in your current
context
Have a practical understanding of how to embed LLN into a range of
vocational subjects, as well as how to plan and fund embedded courses
