Curriculum for DiversityThe launch of a new guide for tutors and curriculum managers working with black and minority ethnic learners was launched at the Abby Community Centre in London on 28th March 2007. The event had been oversubscribed for some weeks and with over 100 people in attendance it provided an opportunity to hear what senior education officers Dr Ben Charles from Enfield and Robert Bennett from Hertfordshire had to say about the special relevance that PCDL has for black and minority adults and to illustrate the good practice that they are undertaking in this area. The launch event also provided an opportunity for delegates to hear from Louise Proctor from the Learning and Skills Council about the latest policy developments with regards to PCDL and to participate in workshops delivered by colleagues from a number of local authorities including Blackburn and Darwin. The launched guide, called A Curriculum for Diversity, outlines some of the good practice that is taking place in various parts of the country and carries out an initial analysis of black and minority ethnic participation in PCDL. In addition to this it contains useful hints and tips gleaned from workshops with experienced tutors and learners from a range of black and ethnic minority groups. It also identifies a number of professional development areas for tutors and curriculum managers. The guides supporting CD contains useful links and further background information on the project as well as useful statistical information provided by those local authorities, colleges and voluntary and community sector organisations that participated in the project. An electronic version of the guide can be downloaded below.
Two further events will take place in April 2007. The first in partnership with Leicester County Council at Leicester county Hall on April 17th and the second in Bradford College in partnership with the college. Further information and application forms for these events can be downloaded below.
Future developments A number of providers have agreed to pilot the guide and evaluate its usefulness. From this NIACE hopes to develop a training module for tutors and curriculum managers working with black and minority ethnic adults.
