Welcome to the webpage of the NIACE Committee of Inquiry into English for Speakers of other Languages (ESOL). This independent committee is supported by NIACE and chaired by Derek Grover CB. The membership is designed to provide a good cross section of people involved in ESOL in terms of roles, organisations and geography.

The committee will consider the major challenges facing ESOL and will focus on 5 areas:

bulletDefinition, purpose and need for ESOL;
bulletLeadership and management;
bulletQuality of teaching, learning and support;
bulletTeacher training;
bulletFunding.

We aim to provide realistic and helpful recommendations to policy makers, funders, inspectorates, providers and practitioners for the future good of ESOL provision in England.

We want to hear the views of all those concerned with ESOL, including adult speakers of other languages, both learners and adults not presently engaged in learning. Please use our consultation questionnaire and/or framework for focus groups with speakers of other languages to submit evidence.

Definition: We are using the term ESOL to include all provision for speakers of other languages. This covers all settings where teaching and learning takes place, and encompasses language support to enable learners to access other subjects as well as designated language learning provision.
