| The
Learning and Skills Council’s (LSC) Single Equality Scheme Support
Programme is designed to support your organisation embed the values
and principles of equality and diversity and in turn the LSC’s Single
Equality Scheme.
The Programme provides guidance and support that
is tailored to meet different regional priorities. Throughout the
Programme your organisation will have the opportunity to influence the
tools and materials developed to ensure that your needs are met.
The programme covers 7 areas of equality: race,
gender, disability, religion and belief, age, sexual orientation and
transgender.
The Programme builds upon existing LSC
publications and recent equality and diversity initiatives, including
the Disability Equality Duty Support Programme.
What are the
benefits of participation in the Single Equality Scheme Support
Programme?
The Programme aims to:
- equip your organisation with the skills and
tools to assess your existing equality schemes;
- provide your organisation with the skills and
tools to adopt a single equality or equalities approach;
- assist your organisation in embedding the
requirements of the LSC’s Single Equality Scheme into its day-to-day
processes;
- promote the sharing of good practice on a
range of issues including the setting of equality and diversity
impact measures and single equality impact assessment.
All LSC supported learning providers can
participate in the Programme including colleges, secure environments,
voluntary and community sector organisations, local authority
providers and providers of work based learning.
How can
my organisation participate?
By attending a regional seminar your
organisation will gain a good understanding of:
- achievements and lessons learnt in embedding
equalities;
- how to self assess and review existing
equality schemes;
- how to develop single equality schemes and
single equality action plans;
- how to involve learners, staff and other
stakeholders from diverse backgrounds in the development of equality
schemes;
- how to conduct equality impact assessments.
Materials and tools developed throughout the
programme will be presented at the regional seminars.
By joining the Virtual Learning Environment. The
VLE contains:
- resources and publications on the 7 areas of
equality covered by the programme;
- the latest news on all equality areas;
- a discussion forum;
- regional specific information;
- information relating to regional action
working development projects.

What else does my organisation need to
know?
Regional briefings took place in January 2008.
Information was presented on equality and diversity and the Single
Equality Scheme Support Programme in your region. You can access the
information given at the Regional Briefings on the Virtual Learning
Environment.
Learning Providers participating in regional
action working projects are undertaking development activity on:
- implementing effective impact assessment;
- involving stakeholders;
- engaging the workforce;
- collecting and using data effectively;
- using specialist support agents.
Action working participants will share their
experiences at your regional seminar.

NIACE, the National Institute of Adult
Continuing Education and LSN, the Learning and Skills Network are
implementing the programme on behalf of the LSC.
The programme is supported by a wider
partnership which acts as an advisory group and includes
representatives of Association of Colleges, Centre for Excellence and
Leadership, Lifelong Learning UK, National Union of Students, Skill:
National Bureau for Students with Disabilities, Unionlearn TUC,
University and Colleges Union, UNISON.
