Cover of Adult Basic Skills and IAG

This publication is not a comprehensive description of what is happening in this fast developing field or an evaluative review of the practice we describe. Nor is it possible in such a short publication to present enough detail on any project to enable you to evaluate it or to decide whether what works in one context will work in yours. Instead, we have chosen projects which we think are successful and we hope that reading about them will stimulate and encourage you to reflect on, and develop, your own practice.

At the back of the publication is a list of the organisations whose work is described here – all are happy for you to contact them if you want to talk over the merits of different ideas. Our intention is that this publication will act as a way of putting IAG workers in touch with each other.

This publication therefore relies on the value judgements of a number of people; IAG Partnership managers and co-ordinators who reported on interesting and worthwhile projects; workers from those projects who reflected on their practice; and the author, who hopes that these initiatives will be interesting and stimulating to you.
