A Royal Society for Learning?
Adults who are not part of the education establishment, but who are interested in learning about learning, find the diversity of ‘bodies’ and ‘initiatives’ dealing with adult education, further education, post-16 education, higher education, training, development, etc., very confusing. NIACE has won an excellent reputation for its research and has made an outstanding contribution by promoting Adult Learners’ Week and supporting the Campaign for Learning. Some NIACE research has been of value to me during my inquiry into the role of television in encouraging older men and women to find and take up learning opportunities. But isn’t it time now to think about creating an overarching Institute for Learning or even a (Royal?) Society for Learning?
