A Royal Society for Learning?

John Farago

John Farago is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and holds a Masters’ Degree in Life Course Development from Birkbeck College, London, gained as a mature student. In recent years he has attended several national and international gatherings of educators. As the outcome of these experiences he raises an interesting question for NIACE. He comes to the education of adults after many years working at senior management and director level in industry.

Adults who are not part of the education establishment, but who are interested in learning about learning, find the diversity of ‘bodies’ and ‘initiatives’ dealing with adult education, further education, post-16 education, higher education, training, development, etc., very confusing.

NIACE has won an excellent reputation for its research and has made an outstanding contribution by promoting Adult Learners’ Week and supporting the Campaign for Learning. Some NIACE research has been of value to me during my inquiry into the role of television in encouraging older men and women to find and take up learning opportunities. But isn’t it time now to think about creating an overarching Institute for Learning or even a (Royal?) Society for Learning?
