"Past initiatives to improve literacy and numeracy skills have produced limited progress, only bold and imaginative policies, engaging those who can make a real difference in the workplace and communities, will change this cultural inheritance"
Skills for life: the national strategy for improving adult literacy and numeracy skills. DfEE, 2001
In 2001, the Learning and Skills Council provided funding to extend outreach provision in local community settings through pilot projects. The aim of the projects was to explore innovative and effective ways to attract new basic skills and ESOL learners from 'hard-to-reach' groups and to build the capacity of institutions to undertake further outreach work.
This guide brings together the good practice demonstrated and developed through these projects. Using case studies it explores topics such as:
| Engaging new learners; | |
| Working in partnerships; | |
| Staff developments; | |
| Recording outcomes; | |
| Using information technology. |
Opening up a new world will inspire practitioners to try new, unusual and innovative approaches to basic skills.
