Special Issue of Convergence

This is a call for proposals for a special refereed issue of Convergence, which is to be devoted to the role of the arts/crafts in adult learning and the creation of social justice/change.

The issue will be composed of 8–9 articles that will be congruent with the aim of Convergence to publish articles that are practical in nature, or are applications in practice of theoretical insights. A key criterion for publication should be whether or not an article will be useful to adult educators in their work. Possible Topics for this Special Issue

We welcome articles that will help practitioners, teachers, and researchers understand the role of the arts and crafts in the creation of social justice.  Arts may include but are not limited to: theatre, performance, dance, murals, graffiti, visual arts.

Crafts may include but are not limited to: sculpture, fabric, ceramics, glass, pottery, wood.

We seek articles that offer insights into:

bulletarts/crafts learning and the creation of community and socio-cultural transformation;
bulletthe flexibility of the arts/crafts to investigate specific issues (arts/crafts as research methods or tools);
bulletthe relation of the arts/crafts to improving learning around specific political, economic, social or cultural issues;
bulletthe process of arts/crafts learning in communities and/or adult education classrooms (including literacy and ESL);
bulletcreativity and imagination and their role in creating a better world;
bulletthe consequences of adopting or ignoring the arts/crafts within an adult learning framework;
bulletissues of accessibility to arts/crafts;
bulletaesthetics of art/craft;
bulletre-interpretations of arts/crafts practice through re-theorization (eg: Feminist/post-colonial/post-structural);
bulletcultural animation and social justice.

Types of Submission

We welcome all methodological approaches, including (but not limited to) autobiographical, poetry, case studies, experimental research, ethnographic and observational research, and literature reviews and annotated bibliographies.

Your abstract should be 500 words. If accepted, the final article should be 5000–6100 words (including bibliographies and abstracts).

All proposals will be peer reviewed. Acceptance of a proposal normally results in acceptance of the final article.

 

Important Dates

  1. Submission of proposal (600 words) due: 1 July 2005.
  2. Authors sent response to their proposal by: 22 July 2005.
  3. Completed article due: 4 Nov 2005.
  4. Authors sent comments for revisions by: 30 Dec 2005.
  5. Final manuscript due: 3 April 2006.
  6. Publication of issue: July 2006.
