The Women's Institute has contributed to the learning of women in rural areas for the
last hundred years. This book traces that process and how it led to the opening of Denman
College as part of the short-stay residential college movement in 1948. It describes the
College's development and the effect it has had on the wider WI. research among current
users of the college provides an insight into what motivates adults to learn, how they
evaluate the experience and what it can lead to.
