Tongue-tied but trying? presents the headline findings of a survey carried out by NIACE between 28 April and 9 May 1999. Nearly 4,000 adults were interviewed to gain a picture of adults' language competence in Great Britain.
The results show that regional and social class factors are strong determinants of language competence, as are age and employment status. About two-fifths of those surveyed said they would like to learn another language, citing 60 different languages.
