We all think that voluntary organisations are a good thing, for their members and the community at large. The truth is that we know very little about them. What kinds are there? How many? Who belongs? What happens to them? Are the ripples of their learning and change passed on? How far? Do such organisations change? What is their effect on citizenship and the quality of life? Who runs them? What makes for effectiveness and good leadership, and what spells trouble?
This report of a six-year project in England, Scotland and Wales is the first attempt to answer these fundamental questions, and from its answers it draws important lessons for the voluntary sector, for the professions and training institutions, and for policy-makers in national and local government.
It will be essential reading for anyone concerned with community development, and for all those involved with social development and cultural activity and provision.
Readership: all concerned with community and social development, and cultural activity and provision.
