Developing Embedded Language, Literacy, Numeracy and ESOL Project (DEBS)

Project Status: Completed

The Basic Skills team at NIACE are supporting a new project on 'Developing Embedded Literacy, Language, Numeracy and ESOL'. The first phase of this project concluded with an Expert Seminar on Monday 22 July in London. The aims of the seminar were to:

bulletShare planned work on embedded literacy, numeracy and ESOL provision and activities.
bulletConsider the key requirements of embedded literacy, numeracy and ESOL provision and activities.
bulletContribute to the specification for a DfES-funded project to develop guidance and provide recommendations about different models of embedded literacy, numeracy and ESOL and their funding.

The aim of this first phase was to identify courses that incorporate embedded basic skills and to identify good practice.

The second phase is now running until December 2002, involving 25 organisations that are delivering a range of embedded basic skills courses - 37 in total, over the period August 2002 to March 2003. Following the Expert Seminar, NIACE consultants with relevant expertise were recruited by the Basic Skills team to provide support and gather research on these embedded basic skills courses.

The final phase will be the evaluation, report writing and dissemination. The dissemination conference will be at the Tower Thistle Hotel in London, and eight regional venues. For details of venues, see below.

The project is funded by the Adult Basic Skills Strategy Unit and the Learning and Skills Council. The report will make recommendations about the future of this kind of work, in terms of learning infrastructure, quality and funding.

We hope the Final Report will be available soon. Watch this space.
