Skills for Life: UK online centres and learndirect centres pilot project

[Duration] [Aims] [Key Partners] [Funder] [Target Group] [Progress] [Key Staff] [Contact]

Project Status: Completed

Duration of project

Start: April 2003
End: End of March 2004

Aims

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has commissioned the National Institute for Adult and Continuing Education (NIACE) to develop in partnership with the Basic Skills Agency a package of free training, which will support the delivery of Skills for Life in UK online and learndirect centres.

The aim of this project is to raise awareness of basic skills and to train UK online and learndirect staff in literacy, numeracy and ESOL at levels 2, 3 and 4.

The project will explore the capacity of UK online and learndirect centres to engage with the delivery of the Skills for Life agenda and help identify and shape the roles the centres might play.

The training package, which will be piloted in the North West until the end of March 2004, includes four courses (referred to as Strands 1, 2, 3 and 4) designed to:

bulletProvide staff and volunteers with an introduction to the Skills for Life strategy.
bulletExplore opportunities to develop Skills for Life provision.
bulletHelp staff and volunteers support learners with literacy, numeracy and language skills needs.
bulletIntroduce staff and volunteers to the National Qualifications Framework for teachers and those who support teaching and learning.
bulletHighlight the Skills for Life quality assurance requirements.
bulletProvide staff and volunteers with an opportunity to shape the content of future training.

Progress to date

bullet

Strand 1 training is targeted at centre managers only and contains elements of the new City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate for Adult Learner Support combined with a consultation activity to help shape the content and mode of delivery of future training.

bullet

Strand 2 training is open to all centre staff and volunteers and is essentially Unit 1 of the Level 2 Certificate for Adult Learner Support contextualised to the UK online and learndirect learning environment.

bullet

Strand 3 training is open to all centre staff and volunteers. The strand will focus on the implications of poor basic skills in the UK online and learndirect context and offer practical suggestions for improving the quality of teaching and learning.
The strand will also reflect the new Level 3 Subject Specification for teachers of adult literacy, numeracy and language and the strand will include some of the topics which have been identified as the “minimum coverage” at Level 3 for all post 16 teacher education programmes.

bullet

Strand 4 training is open to all centre staff and volunteers and will provide signposting to the Continual Professional Development programme.

bullet

The pilot phase of the project will be evaluated by the National Research and Development Centre.
