Project History

Previous YALP research (‘Basic Skills Work With Young Adults’, 2002, Jackson, C and Aylward, N) highlighted the range and quality of informal and non-formal literacy, language and numeracy provision for 16-25 year olds varied enormously, and showed a real need for development of practice, materials and policy.

Aims

bulletIdentify and disseminate practices, materials and resources for work with previously or currently marginalised young adults that encourage the development of literacy, language and numeracy skill levels through informal learning.
bulletProvide a framework of critical success factors for working informally on literacy, language and numeracy skills with young adults.
bulletDesign, pilot, evaluate and produce learning and teaching materials oriented specifically to work with young adults in informal learning settings.
bulletIdentify practitioners’ training needs and possible strategies to address them.

Project Themes

Informal and non-formal learning, social exclusion, young adults aged 16 to 25, Skills for Life

Update

This project is now completed. The final report will be launched at a dissemination event in October 2005. The interim report is available in two formats, to download from the NRDC website.
