What is the project about?

The “Making the Jump” project is about how people with learning difficulties can move on from courses and training for work to actually getting a job.

During the project the NIACE project workers visited colleges, adult education centres, supported employment organisations and self-advocacy organisations.

They spoke to staff and people with learning difficulties about making the jump from learning and training to getting a job.

What did the project find?

bulletIt was difficult to find places where people with learning difficulties are being supported to move on to get work at the end of their courses or training.

bulletWhere people with learning difficulties were being helped to make the jump to work, different organisations like colleges and supported employment agencies worked together to make this happen.

Picture 9: people meeting round a table

bulletMoney to pay for services that help people move on from learning and training to work, was hard to find.

bulletSome of the things that help people with learning difficulties to make the jump to work are:
bulletwork experience placements with support

bulletIt is very important to have clear information about
how getting paid work will affect benefits.

Picture 15: An information pack

bulletA lot of people with learning difficulties are worried about
losing their benefits. This puts some people off looking for
a job.

bulletWhen managers are planning services, it is important that
they include courses and training that support people to
move on to work. At the moment this is only happening
in a few places.

bulletMany people with learning difficulties want to work:

“Give us a chance to show what we can do.”

“Never give up. Try and go for something you enjoy people didn’t think I could ever work.”
