DfES Laptop Initiative

Project Status: Completed

 

What is it?

The DfES Laptop Initiative for Adult and Community Learning loaned out 1500 ICT packages to local education authorities and selected voluntary and community organisations for use in adult and community learning. The packages included a laptop, colour printer, scanner, software, support and training.

The initiative which lasts for 3 years aims to develop innovative applications of the machines in:

bulletBasic skills education;
bulletCommunity outreach; and
bulletIn pursuit of the widening participation agenda generally.

The Laptops have been given to:

bulletEnrich teaching;
bulletProvide quality support for learners; and
bulletSee ICT as a regular feature in literacy and other provision.

 

Who Co-ordinates it?

NIACE and the Basic Skills Agency  are working in partnership to co-ordinate the initiative, provide help and support on learning issues and monitor the effectiveness of the programme.

 

How is it supported?

Support is provided in five main ways

bulletResources
NIACE has published a number of titles, briefing sheets and reports on the use of laptops in the community, along with more general titles on Outreach and ICT (Information and Communications Technology). 
bulletElectronic mailgroup
An Electronic mailgroup called "Making-IT-Accessible" to facilitate discussions between projects in the Laptop Initiative.
bulletEvents
Training and Networking events around the Country.
bulletVisits

Surveys

NIACE has carried out two surveys on the projects involved in  the Laptop Initiative which are managed by NIACE (i.e. not including those managed by the BSA).  

The first survey took place six months into the initiative and looked at the results of 100 respondents.  The second survey  took place 18 months into the initiative and looked at the results from129 respondents.  The results of both surveys can be found by following the appropriate link below.
