Individual awareness Raising for Adults

Project Status: Completed

IT has the potential to contribute to overcoming social exclusion and assist disadvantaged groups to take an active part in the community. Equally, it has the potential to further disadvantage and exclude groups if they are not able to take advantage of technological developments.

The provision of IT Awareness and introductory schemes has been part of mainstream adult education and training for many years. However, there are substantial numbers of people unwilling or unable to take advantage of these programmes.

This project set out to evaluate existing provision to identify and share effective practice and to explore new ways of meeting the needs of particular groups.

The project supported thirteen organisations to explore approaches to developing IT Awareness amongst disadvantaged groups. The thirteen study sites were:

bulletPortslade Community College, Brighton
bulletSouth Cheshire College, Crewe
bulletCowley Training Centre, Oxford
bulletWorkers' Educational Association, Manchester
bulletIsles Telecroft, Shetland
bulletCambridge Training and Development, Cambridge
bulletChelmsley Wood Library, Solihull
bulletEaling Tertiary College, Ealing
bulletPhoenix Telecentre, Cumbria
bulletHillcroft College, Surbiton
bulletLincolnshire Training and Enterprise Council
bulletKent Adult Education, Thanet
bulletSwarthmore, Leeds

In addition to the study sites, the project sought to contact other UK groups or organisations providing IT Awareness.

Further details were given in this Press Release.

The project findings were published as "IT Awareness Raising for Adults" (Ref. OL254) by the Department for Education and Employment (now the Department for Education and Skills), Training Technology Unit.   Tel: 0345 60 222 60
