Theatre as a site for Learning

The impact of drama on the development of oracy among young adults

Project Status: Completed

Duration: January – September 2006
Partners: Centre for Labour Market Studies, University of Leicester, The Haymarket Theatre, Leicester College, Glen Parva YOI (logos at foot of page)
Funders: Department for Education and Skills, Arts Council England
Project Leader: Bethia McNeil, Project Officer

This project involved artists and researchers working together to explore and evaluate the scope and impact of theatre as a site and drama as a tool for learning in developing oral communication skills (speaking and listening) among young adults. During the pilot project, we worked with young adults aged 18-21 who had received custodial sentences, many of whom were disadvantaged and disengaged from formal education, training and employment.

The work was overseen by a unique partnership involving YALP, the Centre for Labour Market Studies at the University of Leicester, the Haymarket Theatre, Leicester College and Glen Parva YOI. The first phase of the project will took place between October 2005 and January 2006, and involved a literature review examining key themes and debates around the areas of learning and skills, drama as education, and work with young offenders. Case studies were also produced to complement the review. A summary report of this phase can be found below.

The second phase of the project took  place between January and September 2006, and involved an action research and development project, with a ten-week drama programme at Glen Parva YOI at its heart.  The final report was  published in September 2006, and launched at a dissemination seminar on September 26.
