The key purpose of this project was to explore and analyse existing literacy, language and numeracy provision targeted at young parents and parents to be. In undertaking this project, YALP used a range of methods to consult with both practitioners and young parents to identify current practice, key issues and critical success factors. This involved a postal questionnaire, telephone interviews, project visits and consultations. The initial evidence gathering phase of the project was followed by the development of an outline framework for a literacy, language and numeracy learning programme. The framework is structured around the issues that young parents identify as important and relevant in their lives, with an emphasis upon supporting them to become confident and independent young parents, workers and learners. The outline framework is designed to support practitioners in embedding literacy, language and numeracy within the key issues identified by young parents, it also provides guidance on implementing a number of critical success factors identified through the research. YALP are running 5 free training sessions during January and February 2008: "Young Parents and Literacy, Language and Numeracy" targeted at practitioners working across the Youth Sector, the Health Sector and within community learning who are not literacy, language and numeracy specialists but would like to learn more about integrating these skills into their provision and supporting these skills for young parents and parents-to-be.
