Project Status: Completed Research has identified that young parents are often from socially deprived backgrounds; living in rundown areas, in workless households and are likely to have dropped out of formal education. The Young Adults Learning Partnership, with experience and expertise in researching effective provision of learning for socially excluded young adults, joined together with the Family Learning Team to share knowledge and to explore further, young parents’ experience of family learning. The Young Parents’ Initiative funded by DfES through the Family Learning team at NIACE, ran from October 2004 to March 2005. It set out to explore further the identity of young parents as learners and what kinds of learning experiences were on offer to young parents from voluntary and community organisations. 468 research questionnaires were completed by young parents and 55 by organisations offering informal learning opportunities to young parents. 11 case study sites were visited and a young parents’ one-day consultation event was held at the Midlands Arts Centre in Birmingham, to further explore young parents’ concept of family learning. A publication was produced in March 2005, detailing the findings from this research and includes case studies from projects offering learning opportunities to young mothers and to young fathers. NIACE has run out of hard copies of this publication, but you can download a PDF version below.
