Evaluation Toolkit for Youth Arts

Project Status: Completed

“In youth arts you are actively involved in making something as a youth artist. You are not simply learning about the arts. This means seizing every opportunity, taking risks and inspiring change.” (Young person, Second Wave)

Youth arts is becoming an imaginative and engaging way of actively involving young people in influencing services and organisations and democratic processes, since more conventional arrangements and structures (meetings, forums, councils) do not have the same kind of appeal and impact, in particular among those who lack confidence in more formal surroundings.

As part of the Partners in Innovation (PIN) project, managed by The National Youth Agency, YALP worked with 5 youth arts projects to design, develop and test out a framework for evaluation that involved young people centrally in the experience. Those projects were:

bulletSecond Wave Centre for Youth Arts, Deptford, London.
bulletConnect Youth Culture, North Yorkshire County Council.
bulletStep On, Walsall Youth Arts, West Midlands.
bulletAPT Arts, Nottingham City Arts.
bulletOff the Wall - London Youth/Stacked Wonky Dance Company.

The project aimed to demonstrate the impact and outcomes of youth arts; and to enhance the capacity of youth arts organisations to do this for themselves.

The final report will be available in December 2006.
