Kick starting an adult maths initiative at The Skills Show

NIACE is excited to kick start a new initiative at The Skills Show (15-17 November), called Action on Adult Maths. Commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), Action on Adult Maths is an important initiative to engage and enthuse adults about maths, bringing together a range of organisations leading on or supporting the delivery of maths for adults.

All adults know something about and can do some maths, so by encouraging them to Have a Go at activities at our Skills Show stall and beyond, we hope to spark an interest in developing their skills and knowledge. Maths is important in the workplace, the home and the community and it’s vital that parents are positive about maths to encourage their children to develop confidence in the subject.

Major themes NIACE will be developing over the coming months will include the use of volunteers and mentors, building on successful programmes such as Union Learning Representatives and Community Learning Champions, and looking at what new technologies have to offer. We will explore the best ways to support the maths workforce and stimulate interest in adult maths in the media.

Being confident and capable at maths can impact on employability, on confidence, on supporting children’s development and on feeling able to take part in community activity. This initiative will work with a range of organisations to develop messages, strategies and programmes to support adult engagement.

So if you want to find out more about the initiative or if you want to test out your maths skills through some fun activities, come and visit us at Stall 117 in Hall 1.

You can also stay updated and  join the conversation on Twitter – @NIACEhq will be using #maths4us and #theskillsshow.
