Background

Whilst much teaching and learning is carried out in schools on sustainable development, adults who are interested in this area, or want to find out more, often turn to campaigning and activist groups for sources of information and understanding. Whilst adult learning and activism are not the same thing it can be argued that there are areas of overlap which could be usefully explored and examined in relation to reach, content and methodologies. Learning from each other could assist campaigning, activist and adult learning organisations to reach more adults, share creative approaches and foster deeper understanding and knowledge to underpin long term involvement. Based on an understanding that sustainable development could be situated in the interstices of economic, social and environmental issues affecting local and global communities, this seminar explores and examines the relationship between adult and community learning and activism and sustainable development.

We aim to create a forum for exchanging knowledge, information and insight and developing working partnerships between organisations involved in activism, campaigning and adult learning on sustainable development issues.

Aims

The event aims to:

• share insight and knowledge about the different organisations and types of activity, exploring areas of commonality and difference
• examine how different organisations can work together in relation to sustainability issues and complement and supplement each other's activity
• share ideas about extending the reach of activities to more and different groups of people
• identify ways in which advocacy work in adult learning could be enhanced through co-operation with activism
• explore opportunities for joint developments, bringing together common agendas at local, regional and national levels
• examine ways of communicating, identifying different uses of specialist terminology, language and jargon.
