Background

NIACE (National Institute of Adult and Continuing Education), LLNs (Lifelong Learning Networks), and UVAC (University Vocational Awards Council) share a common purpose to promote the need for flexible provision, work-based learning opportunities and guidance for non-traditional adult learners. These are paramount not only to individual success but also to increase the nation’s skills and knowledge.

January 2011 marks a start of the implementation of the Government’s plans for Higher Education, following the Comprehensive Spending Review this autumn and the subsequent re-ordering of Departmental priorities following the publication of the Browne Review. It is therefore an opportune time to look at the challenges of current government policy for higher education and identify strategies to meet them.

Aims

This conference will bring together practitioners, policy makers and providers, employers and other stakeholders to consider current policy, its implications for the sectors and how challenges can be met. There will be the opportunity to learn about cutting edge work which is taking place through partnership working and to consider how it can be sustained. The conference will offer delegates the opportunity to:

  • hear key policy messages about provision for adults into and through Higher Education
  • hear responses from the sectors and significant intermediaries
  • share views and experiences through a variety of workshops on specific themes around apprenticeships, inclusion, guidance, and admissions
  • visit a range of market stalls in the learning zones and access free resources.

Post-event drinks reception

Conference attendees are invited to a free reception where CFE will launch its latest report based on the experiences of employers that have supported the progression of Advanced Apprentices into Higher Education. The report, funded by the Skills for Sustainable Communities Lifelong Learning Network, will outline the costs, benefits, barriers and enablers to progression from an employer perspective. The reception will also be attended by some of the employers and apprentices that participated in the research.
