Training Aims

NIACE is pleased to be working in partnership with Research and Practice in Adult Literacy (RaPAL) to offer this new half day workshop.  The training is designed for literacy practitioners to introduce a range of interactive learning technologies, devices and resources to support the teaching, learning and assessment of English/ Literacies.

Objectives

By the end of the session, participants will have:

  • been introduced to, experienced and evaluated a range of devices and technologies;
  • explored a range of teaching, learning and assessment resources and strategies; 
  • discussed the changing nature of language and literacy in the context of developing technologies; and,
  • analysed the impact, opportunities and challenges in our roles as teachers, managers and curriculum developers.

Programme Outline

Welcome and Introductions

Social/Educational Networking and learner participation

An introduction to the impact that Web 2.0can have on learners’ willingness to read and write, and the wide-ranging impacts on learners’ literacy development.

(2)

Hardware

Devices that can be used to aid literacy development including: tablets, smart phones, e-readers, laptops and PCs.

(3)

Blogging and reviewing texts online

Ways of incorporating blogging (a form of public/ and/or collaborative writing) in literacy learning programmes.

Making use of book review sites to encourage learners to read critically and share their views and opinions with others.

Group mind mapping

How learners can work together to design texts using collaborative mind mapping sites and software

Writing and proofreading collaboratively

Using online note-making tool (such as Evernote, Google Docs and Ether Pad) for shared note taking, writing and referencing tasks.

Learning platforms and literacy development

How to make the best use of learning platforms such as Moodle, Edmodo and Blackboard for literacy development. 

Introducing LAMS as a tool for collaborative literacy development on a learning platform.

Action planning for individual contexts

Reflection on some of the ideas introduced.

What you can take back to your organisation and use in your own working context.

Event Information

Arrival, registration is at 9.00 for a 9:30am start. The event will end at 12.30pm

Introductory event fee per person:

£80 - NIACE members and RaPAL members fee
£95 - Non NIACE and non RaPAL members fee
(includes refreshments during the session.  Lunch is not provided)

NB: NIACE does not charge VAT on conference or course fees.

Only online application forms with the payments section completed will be processed.

NB: If you wish us to invoice your employer we require a copy of the Purchase Order before the form is processed.

Places will be allocated in order of receipt of completed applications (one online application per person)

Video cameras may be in use at this event. If you do not wish to be photographed or appear on the video outputs please indicate this on the application form and make yourself known at registration

Participants should be prepared to take their own notes as there may not be handouts for all sessions

A 15 working days notice period is required for provision of electronic note-takers, sign language interpreters and transcription to Braille
