This year’s NIACE Annual Policy Conference for Adult Learners’ Week 2009 will be on the theme Beyond the Recession: Adult Learning in a Changing World. This year, the event is being supported by QCA, the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
This year’s conference focuses on the educational challenges arising from the global economic downturn – and NIACE’s concern for a re-balancing of funding for adult learning to restore opportunities lost in further, higher and community education in recent years, to contribute effectively to the support for and re-engagement of individuals and communities affected by the recession.
The conference – which will be participatory in style, with questions and discussion from the floor – will include contributions from:
- Rt Hon John Denham MP, Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills
- Chris Humphries, CEO of the UK Commission for Employment and Skills
- Pam Johnson, Head of Learning and Organising Services at UNISON
- Andrew Sich, Head of Corporate Affairs at City & Guilds
- Alan Tuckett, Chief Executive of NIACE.
The event will be of interest to:
- Adult learning practitioners across all sectors
- Policy-makers and opinion-formers
- Strategists and managers.
The event will take place at the Mermaid Theatre. Arrival and registration is from 10.00am for a 10.30am start. The conference will finish at 2.30pm and lunch will be included. There is a fee of £50 for event.
Adult Learners’ Week is supported by the European Social Fund and is now in its 18th year. It is the UK’s largest festival of learning and the campaign enjoys unprecedented levels of support. As well as co-ordinating awards for outstanding adult learners and thousands of local and regional activities during the Week, NIACE organises a number of high-profile national events. The Annual Policy Conference is one highlight in this programme.
We hope you will be able to join us for what promises to be a stimulating contribution to Adult Learners’ Week 2009. Places will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis.
