The CLC approach has been proved to work, it fits in with the government’s thinking on the Big Society - and local authorities should make the funding available to carry on this work.

Steve Robinson, Chief Executive, Cheshire West and Chester Council

Background

For people charged with delivering public services in straitened times, the burning issue is how to tackle disadvantage more effectively. Community Learning Champions (CLCs) – aka learning advocates – are a way of tapping into the resources of local people, enabling them to design solutions to the problems they define. With the right training and support, CLCs have shown a remarkable capacity for devising new solutions to seemingly intractable social problems.

Aims

This seminar is for adult learning budget providers who are wondering how to make more effective use of their resources whilst addressing the priorities of localism and the Big Society.

It will look at the way the CLC approach is being developed in three settings:

  • a local authority adult learning service
  • a FE college
  • a voluntary sector organisation.

The aim is to help would-be organisers of CLC projects think through key issues such as:

  • targeting groups or communities
  • support and training
  • funding and sustainability.
